How do I stick to my diet?
One of the questions I get asked a lot is how do I stick to my diet? There isn’t a one size fits all answer to this unfortunately. But through my work with all of my clients I’ve managed to pick up some tips and tricks to make it a little easier.
In this post, I will go five of the most tried and tested ways that will make it feel much easier to stick to your new plan
Don’t bring junk food into the house.
Make sure you’re not hungry when you go to the grocery store, when you’re hungry your will power is at its lowest, and all the tasty sugary food looks amazing!
If you’ve had a good meal then you’re much more likely to make better food choices, such as trying to mainly buy healthy and un-processed items.
I get cravings for ice cream during the week, but the added hurdle of actually having to leave the house and go get it changes my mind.
A big part of this is to make sure you get rid of your junk food drawer or just put healthy snacks in there.
We are creatures of habit and you’ll often find yourself wandering over to this little treasure chest… Make sure you put healthier options such as rice cakes and fruit in there for when you’re feeling a little peckish…. or just bored!
Make Monday-Friday your safe zone.
As I mentioned above, there’s no junk food in our house so I pretty much eat like an angel during the week. On the weekends though, I tend to eat out once or twice and that’s my “reward” time for eating healthy during the week.
Nobody is perfect, so give yourself the opportunity to eat fun stuff from time to time.
Make peace with food.
It took me years to realise that what I put in my mouth affected my body, but it absolutely does. I could never find balance until I got my eating in order since it’s such a huge part of the equation.
If you have an emotional response to eating try to get at the source so you can stop the emotion that causes the eating. (Easier said than done… I know!)
Many of my clients tend to make bad eating choices when they are stressed or when they are tired.
So try and reduce your stress and get as much good sleep as you can, cutting down on the booze will also help with this.
Put the phone down and turn off the TV
Scientific studies have shown that we actually feel more full when are concentrating on the food that we are eating instead of being distracted with TV and social media.
Mindful eating will also make you appreciate and enjoy the food more
It will also give you a moment to yourself in the middle of your busy day.
So to sum it up there are a few small changes that you can make to your life and your relationship with food and eating that can have a really big impact on your weight and overall health. I hope these tips helped, let me know in the comments below if you can think of any others.
