Getting started with a new fitness routine is the easy part!
The problem happens the next day or the next week…. when life always gets in the way.
You might have had a bad day at work and you just can’t be bothered to go and end up sitting in front of the telly watching gogglebox with a large pizza.
In this post, I’ve put together four sure-fire tips that will help you stick to your new plan and actually get fitter.
Lift something heavy!.
I can’t stress this enough. Every person, regardless of age and weight, should be throwing up Iron. Trust me, you will not get huge muscles. But you will burn fat like crazy and slim down.
Lifting weights/doing resistance training is the best advice I can give anyone.
Find an activity you love.
Swimming, playing tennis, biking, hiking, running, rowing, doing the elliptical. All of these are enjoyable to different people, and all of them provide pretty awesome cardio.
Find one or two that you love. I personally do a mix of running, elliptical and weights; but again, it’s all about finding activities that don’t make you want to quit after the first week.
Find your unique rhythm.
Lots of people ask “how often do you work out?” but how often I work out won’t help you because everyone is different.
One person may only need to go a couple of times a week, but another person may need to go 5 times a week to reach their goals.
Also, consider your schedule and don’t set yourself up for failure.
For example; if you’re not a morning person and struggle to get out of bed, don’t plan on doing 6 am runs every other day. Find what works for you and stick with it.
Prep the night before.
We always have good intentions the day before, but then when we wake up feeling groggy on that cold dark morning, going for that 5k run doesn’t sound as fun any more.
If you’re planning on going to the gym in the morning or after work make sure your gym kit is already packed and ready to go.
This works much better than trying to do it in the morning while you’re rushing around and trying to put your clothes on and shove a piece of toast down.
Set a goal.. and tell people about it!
Nothing feels better than setting a goal and smashing it.
I set my most recent goal of sub 15% bodyfat this October. I also told a few of my closest friends that this was my target.
Not only setting this goal give me focus but my friends also provided support that helped me get over the low points when I was losing motivation. It was not about losing weight (I actually gained a few pounds), it was about trying something that seemed impossible and overcoming it.
I’ve tried many different ideas with my clients over the years, but these are the ones that I keep coming back to week after week!
Let me know if there are any that I’ve missed in the comments below.
